Job Description

Orientation (New Staff Only):  July 8 - 9, 2024  /  Orientation (All Staff): July 8, 2024      

Program Dates:  July 10, 2024 - August 20, 2024

This is a direct care position involving supervision and observation of students enrolled in the class. The Student Behavioral Assistant acts independently and as a team member in directing, counseling and instructing children in planned/unplanned instructional and recreational activities and daily living routines.

TYPICAL DUTIES: 

  1. Performs those crisis intervention functions as outlined by the intensive management program supervisor. 
  2. Implements classroom and behavioral goals as determined by the multi-disciplinary instructional team. Assists with the implementation of appropriate coping and resolution skills for students. 
  3. Assists the teacher in small group instruction including planning, evaluating and providing direct instruction under the supervision of the teacher. 
  4. Assists the teacher in preparing instructional materials for classroom teaching and implements certain units as directed by the teacher. 
  5. Collaborates with the teacher in providing progress notes and incident reports as needed. 
  6. Plans and implements extracurricular activities including play productions, seasonal events, etc. 
  7. Provides supervision to student groups during transition times, lunch periods and throughout the day. 
  8. Attends all in-service and regular classroom based staffings as directed b the teacher. 
  9. Maintains contact with outside agencies if/when students are involved in jobs, vocational training, etc. as directed by the instructional team. 
  10. Maintains an awareness of current treatment plans of students assigned and is perceptive of the impact that relationships and activities have on the treatment plan objectives communicating these observations to the instructional team. 
  11. Candidates will need too undergo rigorous three day training in Therapeutic Crisis Intervention and yearly re-certification refreshers in the above.

 SPECIAL SKILLS AND APTITUDES:

Candidates must be flexible, patient, physically/emotionally able to handle confrontational situations with students without personalizing these events.  The candidates will also need to be resilient to dealing with sudden, explosive crises that may cause deviations from work plans and schedules.

Job Qualifications

Experience: Two (2) years of full-time paid or the part-time equivalent experience involving the supervision, counseling or instruction of children in a school facility, institution or agency devoted to the care, education, rehabilitation or detention of children.

OR

Education: Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with an Associate’s degree or completion of 60 credit hours with 9 credit hours in Psychology, Social Work, Child Development or a related field.  Complete certification training as required for Therapeutic Crisis Intervention/Crisis management students.
