Job Description

This is a direct care position involving supervision and observation of all students enrolled at Westside Academy. The Paraprofessional works collaboratively with teachers to assist with instruction of students, recreation activities, and daily living routine.

TYPICAL DUTIES:

  1. Implements classroom and behavioral goals as determined by the multi-disciplinary instructional team.
  2. Assists with the implementation of appropriate coping and resolution skills for students in collaboration with social worker.
  3. Assists the teacher in preparing instructional materials for classroom teaching.
  4. Collaborates with the teacher in providing progress notes and incident reports as needed.
  5. Provides supervision to student groups during transition times, lunch periods, and throughout the day.
  6. Attends all in-service and regular classroom-based staffing as directed by the principal.
  7. Maintains an awareness of current treatment plans of students assigned and is perceptive of the impact that the relationships and activities have on the treatment plan objectives, communicating these observations to the instructional team.
  8. Candidates selected for the position will need to undergo a rigorous three-day training in the Therapeutic Crisis Intervention and yearly re-certification refreshers in the above.
  9. Participates in school-wide PBIS initiatives.
  10. Is motivated to assist students through a Life Space Interview and reintegrate back instruction.
  11. Understands relationships with our student population and how they are affected by ACES, and is a firm believer and encourager of Restorative Practice. Maintaining healthy relational boundaries are key to students’ performance and growth both academically and socially/emotionally.

Job Qualifications

Must possess or meet requirements for Civil Service title of Student Behavioral Assistant, Teacher Aide or School Aide. 

School Aide -  No education qualifications

Teacher Aide - One (1) year of full-time or its part-time equivalent paid or volunteer equivalent experience working in a clerical capacity; OR One (1) year of full-time or its part-time equivalent paid or volunteer equivalent experience working with children; OR, Possession of a certificate of completion for a course for Child Care through an occupational school, The American Red Cross or similar agency, **;

Student Behavioral Assistant - Two (2) years of full-time paid or the part-time equivalent experience involving the supervision, counseling or instruction of children in a school facility, institution or agency devoted to the care, education, rehabilitation or detention of children; OR Graduation from a regionally accredited or NYS registered college or university with an Associate's degree or completion of 60 credit hours.

 

SPECIAL SKILLS AND APTITUDES:

Candidates must be flexible, patient, and physically/emotionally able to handle confrontational situations without personalizing these events. The candidates will also need to be resilient in dealing with sudden, explosive crises that may cause deviations from work plans and schedules.
