Job Description

Orientation (New Staff Only):  July 5, 2023  /  Orientation (All Staff): July 6, 2023      

Program Dates:  July 10, 2023 - August 18, 2023

Provide consultation, transition support and staff development to BOCES and component district staff to meet the needs of students with Autism Spectrum Disorders. These services would support both preschool and school aged programming.

TYPICAL DUTIES: 

  1. Provide classroom-based consultation to teachers and support staff in designing appropriate classroom environments and instructional plans for students with Autism Spectrum Disorders. 
  2. Coordinate and/or support transitions of students with Autism Spectrum Disorders between educational systems; Early Intervention to Preschool; Preschool to School Aged; School Aged to Community. 
  3. Provide direct staff development to BOCES and component district staff on progressive structured teaching approaches. 
  4. Coordinate staff development for BOCES and component districts in instructional areas requiring liaison with outside agencies or other community resources. 
  5. Perform Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA) consultant duties as assigned. 
  6. Participate in Structured Teaching Support Group and in Autism Advisory Group; assist in development of long range plans. 
  7. Provide community-based presentations and/or conference/workshop sessions on topics relating to Autism Spectrum Disorders. 
  8. Develop and disseminate information and program descriptions to parents and community based referral sources. 
  9. Represent BOCES 2 in various community forums and committees relating to Autism Spectrum Disorders. 
  10. Participate in staffings and CPSE/CSE meetings as appropriate to review the programs of students. 
  11. Provide individual assessments/consultation for students with Autism Spectrum Disorders. 
  12. Maintain necessary records. 
  13. Perform other such professional related duties as may be assigned by the Assistant Director for Exceptional Children or appropriate Special Education Supervisor.
Job Qualifications

Minimum 5 years experience in Special Education to include students with Autism Spectrum Disorders.  Prefer knowledge of progressive student teaching approaches to include TEACCH and Applied Behavioral Analysis/Discrete Trial Therapy.  

NYS certification in Special Education/Related Field or NYS Certification in School Psychology and NYS License in Clinical Psychology or Master’s in Psychology with focus as an Applied Behavioral Specialist.

Note: Anyone hired as an Autism Specialist under a New York State Teaching Certificate will be hired as a Teacher on Special Assignment (TOSA)
