6. Maintain communication with administrators, teachers and supportive personnel regarding the educational programs for students with visual impairments.

This is a direct care position involving supervision and observation of students enrolled in the class. The Student Behavioral Assistant acts independently and as a team member in directing, counseling and instructing children in planned/unplanned instructional and recreational activities and daily living routines.

TYPICAL DUTIES: 

1. Performs those crisis intervention functions as outlined by the intensive management program supervisor. 
2. Implements classroom and behavioral goals as determined by the multi-disciplinary instructional team. Assists with the implementation of appropriate coping and resolution skills for students. 
3. Assists the teacher in small group instruction including planning, evaluating and providing direct instruction under the supervision of the teacher. 
4. Assists the teacher in preparing instructional materials for classroom teaching and implements certain units as directed by the teacher. 
5. Collaborates with the teacher in providing progress notes and incident reports as needed. 
6. Plans and implements extracurricular activities including play productions, seasonal events, etc. 
7. Provides supervision to student groups during transition times, lunch periods and throughout the day. 
8. Attends all in-service and regular classroom based staffings as directed b the teacher. 
9. Maintains contact with outside agencies if/when students are involved in jobs, vocational training, etc. as directed by the instructional team. 
10. Maintains an awareness of current treatment plans of students assigned and is perceptive of the impact that relationships and activities have on the treatment plan objectives communicating these observations to the instructional team. 
11. Candidates will need too undergo rigorous three day training in Therapeutic Crisis Intervention and yearly re-certification refreshers in the above.

Candidates must be flexible, patient, physically/emotionally able to handle confrontational situations with students without personalizing these events.  The candidates will also need to be resilient to dealing with sudden, explosive crises that may cause deviations from work plans and schedules.

The Special Education Teacher is responsible for developing and implementing an instructional program designed to maximize the academic progress and meet the individual needs of students with special needs enrolled.

TYPICAL DUTIES: 

1. Establishes and implements instructional objectives and units of instruction designed to meet the need of the students enrolled.  These must be consistent with the goals and objectives presented in the Individualized Education Plan (IEP). 
2. Monitors and reports to the administration, parents, and CSE the individual progress of all students enrolled in the special education classes.  This includes progress reports as well as achievement and diagnostic educational evaluations. 
3. Participates in staffing and parent conferences. 
4. Establishes and maintains communication with parents regarding their child's educational program and progress. 
5. Direct the activities of program aides and volunteers in the classroom. 
6. Participate in all meetings scheduled by the Special Education Supervisor. 
7. Performs all classroom clerical duties such as attendance records and completion of forms as required by the program.

The Registered Nurse serves as the medical liaison to classrooms and provides oversight to the Licensed Practical nursing staff.

4. Develops individual health care plans with specific goals, objectives, and interventions of the student with special health needs and/or chronic health problems.

6. Assists with mandated School Immunization program and Screening programs. 
7. Assists in assessing in-school and community health care resources.

5. Provide direct service to individual students in those skills of Orientation and Mobility which will develop or increase the abilities of Visually Impaired children in traveling safely, independently and effectively, in any setting. 
6. Maintain communication with administrators, teachers and supportive personnel regarding the educational programs for students with visual impairments. 
7. Participate in staffing conferences and committee on Special Education meetings to review the programs of students. 
8. Maintain necessary records. 
9. Serve as an instructor in workshops offered to Special Education staff, participating school district staff and other instructional groups, as appropriate.

The School Psychologist is responsible for providing the psychological services related to the management and learning of students with special needs.

The School Social Worker is responsible for the provision of student and family counseling and social services.

TYPICAL DUTIES: 

1. Counsel students and family members for interpersonal and/or behavior problems associated with school. 
2. Inform teachers about pertinent experiences that influence student behavior. 
3. Establish and maintain liaison with agencies working with the students and their families, such as Social Security for SSI benefits, Family Court for matters relating to wills and guardianship, the juvenile court system and the Division of Youth. 
4. Participate in staffing conferences to review the programs and progress of students. 
5. Prepare and maintain up-dated records including activities such as triennial social histories, parent conference summaries, and communications with community agencies.

The Licensed Practical Nurse provides health education to parents and staff, monitors mandated screenings and physical evaluations, administers medication and other treatments as prescribed, and maintains health related data for children enrolled in the school age program.

The Interpreter for the Deaf translates verbal communication into manual language in order to facilitate the communication process for the deaf. S(he) is responsible for interpreting instruction, movies, class discussion, assignments and pertinent information for students as necessary.

The primary function of a Cued Speech Transliterator is to act as a facilitator of communication between the deaf and hard of hearing students, the educational staff, and hearing peers in the educational environment. S(he) will facilitate communication across the educational setting while maintaining the mainstream environment. This includes training deaf and hearing consumers regarding the
role of the transliterator. S(he) will establish effective working relationships with students, staff, and all participants in the educational environment.

TYPICAL DUTIES: 

1. Translates verbal information presented in class, or other assigned activities, for the deaf.
2. Translates manual communication from the deaf for teachers/students.
3. Translates for seminars, classes, examinations, meetings, conferences as appropriate.
4. The primary function of a Cued Speech Transliterator is to act as a facilitator of communication between the deaf and hard of hearing students, the educational staff, and hearing peers in the educational environment. This environment includes classrooms, laboratory, field trips, assembly and other educational sites deemed appropriate for student learning during school hours. The Cued Speech Transliterator is a member of the educational team. He/she will convey everything as accurately as possible without interjecting opinions. The Cued Speech Transliterator will encourage the student to establish personal, independent relationships with the teacher and other students.
5. The Cued Speech Transliterator will be held accountable for the following responsibilities:
   • Transliterating according to the specifications of the student’s Individualized Education Program (IEP).
   • Meeting with teachers and staff as deemed appropriate by the educational team and/or supervisor.
   • Utilizing planning time to prepare for demanding course material as necessary for successful transliterating.
   • Demonstrating professionalism in all interactions with administrators, teachers, staff, with parents and students, and with visitors or individuals unfamiliar with the educational setting.
   • Demonstrating professionalism, especially in applying the RID Code of Conduct and the TEC Unit Code of Conduct to the educational setting.
   • Participating in meetings with the educational team to provide input in the IEP development/review pertaining to the Deaf and Hard of Hearing student’s utilization of transliterating services.
   • Following all school policies as stated in the individual school handbooks.
   • Attending all in-service programs and staff meetings as they relate to general information distributed to the faculty, issues that deal specifically with the educational setting, or Cued Speech Transliterator development.
   • Setting up the physical setting for the most successful interpretation (e.g., determining the best physical arrangement for the Cued Speech Transliterator in relation to the teacher’s presentation style and movement within the classroom; working with the teacher to accommodate closed captioning, FM, and lighting needs during movies, filmstrips, use of overhead projector, etc.)
   • Educating consumers as needed (e.g., training students to use the Cued Speech Transliterator, orientating new Cued Speech Transliterators to the school system, inservicing teachers, and referring people to other information sources.)
   • Facilitate communication across the educational setting while maintaining the mainstream environment. This includes training deaf and hearing consumers regarding the role of the transliterator.
   • Establish effective working relationships with students, staff, and all participants in the educational  environment.
   • Pursue professional development opportunities.

2. Assist with planning and instruction of professional development offerings including but not limited to New Teacher Training-(specifically Classroom Management and Elements of Instruction). 
3. Facilitate with supervisors the implementation of PBIS across BOCES special education programs. 
4. Facilitate the implementation of the department’s student data management system-(School Tool) from individual teacher to the program data level.  This would include review of student records and academic programs to insure that students are meeting necessary requirements based on their identified outcomes. 
5. Coordinate special projects as assigned by Assistant Director.  Examples include commencement planning (ex. ordering commencement credentials). 
6. Monitor/purchase instructional materials/periodicals/newspapers/site licenses. 
7. Perform other related duties as assigned by the Assistant Director.

6.  Assist in directing the activities of teacher aides.

The Assistive Technology Specialist provides services to identified students and districts, including: assessment, intervention, consultation and training.

4. Coordinate services through consultation with families and staff members. 
5. Train students, staff, and family members in the use of assistive technology.

The Art Therapist uses art media, images and the creative art process and responses to the art work as a reflection of the student’s development, abilities, personality, interests, concerns and conflicts.  This information is used to assess and treat emotional, physical, mental and emotional disorders in students with special needs.

TYPICAL DUTIES: 

1. Provide individual art therapy assessments in multiple locations. 
2. Prepare and implement art therapy intervention to students individually or in groups as appropriate. 
3. Maintain all necessary and appropriate records. 
4. Communicate with administrators, teachers, parents and students regarding progress/status of the art therapy program. 
5. Participate in staffing, parent meetings, and annual review meetings as appropriate. 
6. Assist classroom staff in developing instructional techniques in the area of art therapy.

1. Assist the Special Education Supervisor in supervising the instructional programs at the ESYP.
2. Assist in planning and conducting faculty meetings, workshops and conferences.
3. Assist the Secondary Special Education Supervisor in supervising and evaluating teachers and support personnel.
4. Support the Special Education Supervisor in coordinating communication among classroom teachers, component school district personnel and parents.
5. Assist in conducting individual conferences with staff and in offering constructive feedback and recommendations for improvement.
6. Assist in the supervision of curriculum development and in the implementation/use of appropriate teaching strategies and instructional resources.
7. Assist in supervising the implementation of the Individualized Education Plans (IEP), student assessments and recommendations to districts on placement, programs and services for students with disabilities.
8. Prepare and maintain class and district lists.
9. Assist in directing matters affecting the operation of the classroom, i.e., approving requisitions, visitation days and field trips.
